کتاب Contrastive Linguistics and The Language Teacher مجموعه‌ای از چهارده مقاله و فهرستی از کتاب‌های انتخابی است. این کتاب، سیر تکاملی و مسیر پیشرفت زبان‌شناسی مقابله‌ای را در سال‌های اخیر نشان داده و زمینه‌های لازم برای تحقیقات بیشتر در این زمینه را تشریح کرده است.

• ابتدا باید یادآور شد که دلیل اصلی دشواری و خطا در یادگیری زبان خارجی، تداخل آن با زبان بومی زبان‌آموزان است.
• دوما، این مشکلات بیشتر به دلیل اختلافات بین دو زبان است؛ هرچه این اختلافات بیشتر باشد، مشکلات یادگیری جدی‌تر خواهند بود.
• سوم اینکه با مقایسه‌ی دو زبان می‌توان دشواری و خطاهای مربوطه را آسان‌تر پیش‌بینی کرد.

نتیجه‌ی حاصله نشان داده که علاوه بر تأثیر زبان مادری زبان‌آموز، شباهت‌های بین دو زبان نیز باعث ایجاد مشکلات خاص و تداخلات می‌شود. بهترین روش برای پیش‌بینی خطاها، مشاهده‌ی عینی در کلاس‌های درس است.

Despite strong critical voices, coming particularly, although not exclusively, from America, a large number of applied linguists and language teachers in Europe and elsewhere have found applied contrastive linguistics useful in language teaching, materials development and the analysis of error The present collection of fourteen papers and a select bibliography is intended to indicate the direction in which applied contrastive linguistics has been developing in recent years and to suggest further areas of research, leading to a better understanding of the language learning process and to the improvement of design and classroom techniques. It will be seen that these may profitably be supplemented under certain circumstances by the inclusion of the contrastive component
