سرانجام، زنی ثروتمند از طبقه اشراف او را به چنگ می اورد. در آنجا، ارنست خدمتکار خانه او می شود و به تدریج با میسی دختر آن زن و همچنین خدمتکاری به نام فان دوست می شود. روابط و صمیمت میان آن ها به اولین تجریه ارنست از بودن در یک خانواده تبدیل می شود، و خیلی زود احساس می کند که واقعا همیشه ارزوی داشتن چنین خانواده و جایگاهی را داشته است.

جیمی فورد (متولد 9 ژوئیه 1968) نویسنده ای آمریکایی است. او شهرت خود را بیشتر برای رمان Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and  به دست اورد؛ رمانی که پس از انتشار نظرات مثبت مخاطبین ومنتقدین را به همراه داشت و در سال 2010 جایزه Asian/Pacific American Awards را در بخش بهترین داستان بزرگسال به خود اختصاص داد. این کتاب در پاییز 2009 و زمستان 2010 توسط American Booksellers Association کتاب شماره یک برای مطالعه و خواندن انتخاب شد.
