رمان نام من سرخ در زمان امپراطور عثمانی سلطان مراد سوم واقع می شود. درون مایه داستان حول محور دو موضوع قتل و عشق دوران می کند. استاد طلاکاری در ابتدای داستان توسط یک نقاش کشته می شود. هیچ کس انتظار ندارد که قاتل یک نقاش باشد. جستجو برای یافتن قاتل تا انتهای داستان ادامه پیدا می کند. درون مایه اصلی کتاب بر گرفته از داستان خسرو و شیرین و حکایت های نظامی است. همچنین، پاموک در این رمان بسیاری از حکایت های فردوسی را نیز بازگو می کند.
