کتاب Essential Introductory Linguistics مقدمه‌ای مختصر و درعین‌حال کامل و جامع از زبان‌شناسی را به شما ارائه می‌دهد. این کتاب جزو منابع کنکور کارشناسی ارشد رشته‌های زبان در ایران است و بااینکه سال‌هاست از نگارش آن می‌گذرد هنوز از محبوبیت آن کاسته نشده است.
امروزه زبان‌شناسی خیلی بیشتر از چیزی که فکرش را می‌کنید موردنیاز دانشجویان است و دانشجویان به دلایل مختلفی باید در کلاس‌هایی که به آن‌ها مقدمه‌ای بر زبان‌شناسی را آموزش مدهند شرکت کنند. دانشجویان ممکن است به خاطر اینکه زبان‌شناسی را به‌عنوان پیش‌نیاز حوزه اصلی مطالعات خود نیاز دارند و یا اینکه زبان‌شناسی با شغل آن‌ها مثل آموزش زبان، صدا شناسی، علوم گفتاری، علوم کامپیوتر، روان‌شناسی شناختی و … مرتبط است به سراغ این دوره بیایند. به همین دلیل امروزه دانشجویان انتظارات زیادی دارند و می‌خواهند کتابی که می‌خوانند واضح و شفاف باشد و محتوا اهداف هر درس به درسی آموزش داده شود. به‌عبارت‌دیگر آن‌ها می‌خواهند بدانند که هدف چیست و می‌خواهند به هدف برسند.
به دلایلی که در بالا به آن‌ها اشاره شد این کتاب با کتاب‌های دیگر این حوزه متفاوت است. اول اینکه موضوعاتی که در این کتاب به آن‌ها اشاره می‌شود محدودتر است و به مواردی که نویسنده آن‌ها را ضروری می‌دادند محدود می‌شود. دوم اینکه به خاطر نوع انتخاب موضوعات این امکان وجود داشت که هر موضوع به‌صورت واضح و کامل ارائه شوند و موضوعات به‌گونه‌ای مرتب و مرتبط با یکدیگر ارائه شوند.

About the Author
The author is Professor of Linguistics at Michigan State University. He specializes in phonology, Ethiopian and Afroasiatic languages and linguistics, and adult language learning. He is the author of a comparative dictionary of Ethiopian languages and numerous articles appearing as book chapters or in journals such as Language, the Journal of Linguistics, the Journal of African Languages and Linguistics, Studies in African Linguistics, and Linguistics
